Television personality and local landlord herself, Jasmine Harman has been appealing for more rented properties to accept pets, and dogs in particular. Suggesting that the stereotypical signage of ˜NO PETS needs to be more flexible with the modern landlord.
Jasmine has joined forces with the charity ˜Dogs Trust and has launched the ˜Ask, Advertise, Add campaign, targeted directed at letting agents in Norfolk and throughout the UK…
The figures behind the campaign back up the strategy: With almost half of the UK population owning a pet, and at the same time one in five homes are now predicted to be privately rented by the year 2016. It would be easy to conclude that these two statistics need to gel with each other, and its is clear that the demand for pet-friendly homes is high, says the charity.
Despite the fact that over 70% of landlords in Norfolk and the UK say they would consider accepting pets, Dogs Trust has found that at least one third of pet owners dont manage to find rental homes with their pets. The new ˜Lets with Pets Scheme was established in 2009 to help potential tenants who were finding it hard to locate pet-friendly rented accommodation. The idea behind the scheme being that they will help pet owners locate privately rented homes through working together with both private landlords and letting agencies. Jasmine reinforced this point:
As a pet-friendly landlord myself, I am delighted that Dogs Trust is looking after the interests of renters with pets¦ In my experience, many landlords would be happy to consider pets but lettings agencies have sometimes been slow to pick up on this and some could do more to find out if pets would be considered.
The new ˜Ask, Advertise, Add campaign is specifically targeted at lettings agencies in Norfolk and the UK. Encouraging agencies to always ask their clients / landlords if they are happy to adopt more of a ˜pets considered approach, as opposed to a ˜No Pets! norm.
